SPRING 2024 // TRANSMISSIONS

A SHARED VIRTUAL SPACE

SIGNAL STRENGTH:

The Performance of Living

  with Cass

What is your signal strength? In this class we’ll explore how to transmit our signals to each other – not simply as information but a record of the source: our bodies experience of time and space. Acts of making sharpen our awareness of our existence. How can living feed into a creative loop that keeps us alive to experience?

Together we’ll consider the relationship between desire, devotion, and attachment — how these animate our creative practice and the performance that is living. In the wave that is our living, we’ll consider the technologies we are working in/ with/ against and how to strengthen our signals. We’ll identify our current, thereby our own currency.

Bedside Table Bibliomancy or Collaborative Efforts in Divination

  with Gabrielle

Following the lead of both historic and contemporary practices of bibliomancy, we will invoke divination to the disorganization of our immediate material affects, scavenging for meaning through nearby books and/or other text based materials such as receipts, calendars, old journals, liner notes, discarded magazines, posters, and more.

Participants will assemble, in collaborative effort and intuitive alignment, their own divinatory hypertext(s).

Decolonizing Your Creative Voice

  with  Anaïs

Language carries violence— particularly in the ways we have been socialized to communicate and relate to one another, operating within a language that was used to colonize many of us out of our communal, holistic, and expansive ways of being. How do writers, coming from all professions, challenge ourselves to develop an ethic in the teaching, construction, and connotation of the language we use? This workshop will ask participants to identify their own ethics and values, interrogating how they do or do not align with dominant social ideals, in order to more mindfully approach their work and loosen any tendencies to adhere to convention. Through various reflective exercises, questions, and group discussions, this workshop will help writers create a sense of authenticity and groundedness in their work.

Madness & Rhythm: a making workshop

  with slp (slip)

What even is madness? Is it mind-bending, inspiring, grounding, pejorative, dangerous? What's rhythm? Is it regular, comforting, soothing, energizing? Can it be jagged, seasonal, punctuated, harsh? Can that be good? This class explores broader conceptions of both rhythm and Madness—including but not limited to Mad Pride and resistance to psychiatric systems and saneism—and how Madness can be a liberatory practice/process/identity/state of mind. We'll explore how rhythm manifests and can help us process, express, accept, cope with our human experiences (Mad or not!)...and possibly even resist oppressive social structures.

Open to anyone, whether they identify as Mad, have explicit psychiatric or diagnostic experiences, or not. Open to makers of any and all genres and mediums.

(Dis)Embodiment: Finding the Body through Breath + Words

  with Jennifer

In this workshop we will explore the interior of our brilliant, wise, and complex bodies through breathwork and somatic writing prompts. It is no easy thing to be a person with a body and yet, we are charged with finding our way through the world in these shapes. Utilizing breath to expand our consciousness, can we honor all of the ways we find embodiment and, at times, experience disembodiment? What’s available to us when we accept our shifting landscape? Can we listen closely? Translate the energetics into language?

This workshop will go between prompted writing practice and breathwork practice. We will work with Diaphragmatic breath and Three part breath to support the fullness of our nervous system.* All bodies welcome— bring your sick body, your tired body, your grieving body, your radiant body, maybe even your joyful body!

* Please note — The Three Part breath practice is not currently recommended for: people in pregnancy (unless you have discussed it with a medical doctor or already have a regular practice), epilepsy, retinal detachment, glaucoma, high blood pressure not controlled by medication, cardiovascular disease, family history of aneurysm, strokes and neurological conditions, and severe osteoporosis. You are still of course welcome to join and just stay with the Diaphragmatic breath! If you have any questions, please do reach out.
